The Daring Young Drone

Daring Young Drone Song (abridged)

1st Chorus
He flies through the air with the greatest of ease:
The white-faced young drone of the Carpenter Bees.
His movements are graceful; he seeks but to please;
And he’s frightened my sweetheart away-y-y-y!

He’s pesky, persistent, but means you no harm.
He’s just out exploring the yard and the barn.
Ignore him if he thinks your fingers or arm
A new lady friend may well bee!

Somewhat near-sighted, oblivious to cues,
He buzzes your nostrils and stares at your shoes.
He’s not really curious, it’s just how he woos.
What’s that on your soles anyway?

Although he is stingless, he hovers so near,
He bothered my sister and frightened my Dear.
I have reassured them there’s nothing to fear,
But he’s frightened my sweetheart away-y-y-y!

My sweetie’s allergic and has fled the scene;
this sorrowful sequel, the drone didn’t mean.
He’s simply on furlough, obeying his queen.
But he’s frightened my sweetheart away-y-y-y!

He just wants to meet or he thinks he has met
you somewhere before at a party, you bet.
Hey, he’s the Tom Cruise of the carpenter set,
And he won’t let a chance slip away!

He zooms about freely from sunlight to shade.
My sweetheart’s inside with a cool lemonade.
He did not intend to make my mate afraid.
But he’s frightened my sweetheart away-y-y-y!

He’s just a carpenter bee with a yen,
Peering at woodpiles and planning a den.
So what if he looms at your nose now and then?
But he’s frightened my sweetheart away.

I’m out on the deck and my hopes are all dashed
My budding romance by a bee has been smashed.
My science is sound, but my feelings are lashed.
For he’s frightened my sweetheart away-y-y-y!

Evening arrives and the bees have gone home;
I, too, must wander, afar and alone.
The mosquitoes come out and now they start to drone,
and they’ve frightened my sweetheart away!

2nd Chorus
They fly through the air with the greatest of ease
the drones and the droners, mosquitoes and bees.
But when they’re asleep, then the ticks and the fleas
Will frighten my sweetheart away-y-y-y!

Come all you young lovers take warning from this,
Before you get snuggly and go for a kiss:
Bugs may unwittingly mess with your bliss,
for they’ve frightened my sweetheart away!

That was fun. I sang the whole thing...and found out my "singing muscles" are out of shape.

I think it is fun to sing it pub style with different people taking a verse and all together on the choruses
